The Kells Cross is an adaptation from the folio depicting the beginning of St. John's Gospel. Though the most popular of Celtic design the knotwork pattern didn't appear in the British Isles until the 7th century AD. The unbroken lines symbolize the process of spiritual growth; following the lines occupies the conscious mind with a repetitive task, as you would a mantra or rosary beads. |
